Lake Okeechobee Guide

LAKE OKEECHOBEE

730 square miles

WHY:

Also known as Florida’s Inland Sea and the state’s largest freshwater lake, the “Big O” enjoys a reputation as one of the nation’s biggest and best fishing spots for largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill. Average bass weigh between 7-10 pounds, but the record is 15.5 pounds.

WHERE:

Located in south-central Florida, the Lake Okeechobee is the eighth largest freshwater lake in the U.S. and the largest in Florida. Lake Okeechobee is also considered one of the top large-mouth bass fishing locations in the U.S. The “Big O” is approximately an hour and 20 minutes from Palm Beach International or Southwest Florida Airport to Clewiston on the southwestern shore.

WHAT:

Due to its size, there are three main areas: Okeechobee on the north end, Belle Glade on the southeast end, and Clewiston on the southwest shore.

HOW:

The Okeechobee area on the northside of the lake is the most populated and offers numerous guided options and ramps for getting on the water. From the southeast, Belle Glade spans Torry Island and Grassy Island and offers calm waters and easy shore casting. Black crappie is plentiful in the area. The Clewiston area in the southwest offers good fishing for largemouth bass and bluegill, as well as some crappie. To the west, the shoal by Fisheating Creek, the only remaining free-flowing water source into the lake, can be accessed by foot or kayak.
